Need more space? Consider these SUV alternatives

Just because you want a more roomy vehicle doesn’t mean you have to get an SUV or truck. There are plenty of great crossover and wagen vehicles that offer a lot of interior space without some of the downfalls to driving a larger vehicle, like poor gas mileage.

Jetta Sportwagen

The new Jetta Sportwagen is an excellent alternative to an SUV. It has a great design that appeals to a wide variety of consumers, and it offers an impressive 66.9 cubic feet of cargo space. Unless you plan on doing some serious off-road driving, the Jetta Sportwagen makes more sense compared to buying an SUV for most buyers. It is extremely fuel-efficient and is estimated at 33 mpg on the highway with the 2.5L model, or 42 mpg with the TDI Clean Diesel model.  The looks and features are there too. The Sportwagen has a finely detailed interior that is available in leather, and some really great optional features like a panoramic sunroof, and touchscreen navigation. Combine all this with Volkswagen’s No-charge scheduled maintenance (see dealer for details) and you have a real winner!

Toyota Venza

A crossover with a touch of luxury, the Toyota Venza offers more space than your typical sedan, and all the comfort you would expect from a high end SUV. Its versatile design is great for active lifestyles, since the lift tailgate makes access to the rear of the vehicle simple, and the available all wheel drive makes driving in adverse conditions less worrisome.  The 2014 Venza is available in three models: the LE, XLE, and Limited. Each model offers a large number of features, but the Limited has the most to offer. The Venza has fold flat rear seats, and just barely beats the Jetta Sportwagen in cargo space with its 70.2 cubic feet.

Ford Transit Connect

If your need for space is more for work purposes, the Ford Transit Connect is a great solution. While it might not have the slick styling of the Venza, the Transit Connect makes up for it in functionality. The Transit Connect Wagon can fit up to seven people with the LWB version. Both the second and third row of seats fold down to offer more space than both the Venza and the Sportwagen. Since the Transit Connect is marketed more for business purposes, it can be a little slim on options. Luckily, Ford offers a Titanium model that has plenty of features including dual climate controls in the front, remote keyless entry, auto dimming mirror, and more.
